Overview: Interest-sensitive whole life (also called current assumption whole life) modernized the traditional product by linking cash value growth to prevailing interest rates rather than rigid actuarial tables. Understanding how it differs from traditional whole life is a key exam topic.

Current assumption whole life (CAWL) sits between traditional whole life and universal life. Like traditional whole life, it provides permanent coverage with a guaranteed death benefit. Unlike traditional whole life, the insurer periodically adjusts the policy's pricing assumptions — the interest rate credited to cash value, the cost of insurance charges, and administrative expenses — to reflect the company's current experience rather than original locked-in assumptions.

The cash value accumulates in an accumulation account that is credited interest at the current rate the insurer declares based on its actual investment portfolio returns. This current rate floats with market conditions but may never fall below a contractually specified guaranteed minimum rate (typically 2%–4%). In a high-rate environment, cash values grow faster than projected; in a low-rate environment, they grow only at the guaranteed floor.

The critical feature distinguishing CAWL from traditional whole life is the redetermination provision: every three to five years, the insurer recalculates the premium required to keep the policy in force, based on actual rather than assumed performance. If interest rates have been higher than originally assumed, premiums may decrease or the policy may become "self-sustaining" earlier than projected. If rates have fallen, premiums may need to increase (up to a contractually specified maximum ceiling). This is fundamentally different from traditional whole life, where the premium is fixed for life regardless of economic conditions.

CAWL policies are typically nonparticipating — they do not pay dividends. Instead, favorable experience flows through as better-than-illustrated cash value growth or lower redetermined premiums. Traditional whole life from mutual companies is usually participating — it pays dividends from the insurer's surplus but doesn't adjust premiums between policyholders.
