Benefit Triggers in Tax-Qualified Policies

The Elimination Period

Even after meeting a benefit trigger, the policyholder must satisfy the elimination period — the long-term care insurance equivalent of a deductible, measured in time rather than dollars. Common elimination periods are 30, 60, or 90 days. During this window, the policyholder pays all care costs out of pocket. Once the elimination period is satisfied, the policy begins reimbursing.
